Acne: common myths, and what treatment realistically looks like
Acne is the most common skin condition we see — in teenagers, and increasingly in adults too, especially women in their 20s and 30s. It’s also surrounded by more myths than almost any other skin problem. Clearing those up changes how well treatment works.
Myth vs reality
“Acne means your skin is dirty.” No. Acne develops when pores get blocked with oil and dead skin cells and bacteria multiply within them — influenced by hormones and genetics. Aggressive scrubbing irritates skin and often makes acne worse. Gentle cleansing twice a day is enough.
“Popping pimples helps them heal faster.” Squeezing pushes the contents deeper, increases inflammation, and is the main avoidable cause of acne scars and dark marks.
“You just have to wait for it to go away.” Untreated acne can scar — and scars are far harder to treat than active acne. Effective treatments exist for every severity.
“If a cream doesn’t work in a week, switch.” This is the most common treatment mistake. Acne medicines work slowly by design.
The realistic treatment timeline
- A treatment that suits you typically shows some improvement in 4–6 weeks
- It needs to be used consistently for 6–8 weeks before judging it
- Clearer skin usually takes 2–3 months or more
Switching products every few days irritates the skin and resets the clock. If there’s no improvement after 6–8 weeks of consistent use, that’s the point to step up — not before.
What treatment can involve
Depending on type and severity: topical treatments (such as retinoids and benzoyl peroxide), oral medication for inflammatory or hormonal acne, and procedures — chemical peels and laser-based options — for stubborn acne and for scars and dark marks left behind. Treatment is matched to your skin type, severity, and history; what worked for a friend may be wrong for you.
When to see a dermatologist
- Acne that hasn’t improved after 6–8 weeks of consistent over-the-counter care
- Painful, deep, or nodular pimples — these scar more readily
- Acne leaving scars or persistent dark marks
- Sudden adult-onset acne, or acne with irregular periods or excess facial hair (worth a hormonal check)
- Acne that is affecting your confidence — that alone is reason enough
